We begin with a meditation each week starting promptly at 6:30 pm. Topic and discussion follows.
Each week, near the end of our meditation, we recite the mantra: OM MANI PADME HUM. We repeat this mantra 21 times. Tonight, we will discuss the significance of this ancient mantra and how it relates to our practice and can serve to assist us in following the path.
Many people around the world recite this mantra thousands of times in a day as part of their daily prayer practice. Tibetans are known to print it on prayer flags that blow the prayer to the winds, carve it on stones, and insert papers printed with it inside holy statues and in prayer wheels.
The most commonly offered meaning is something like “Behold! The jewel in the lotus!” or “Praise to the jewel in the lotus.” But in actuality there are many meanings as it has been interpreted in many ways. One of those interpretations involves the Wheel of Life and the Six Realms of Existence.
Let explore these subjects together in the hope that the power of the words and sounds of this mantra will increase its meaningfulness as we recite it.
