It’s flailing feet and fiddles, futuristic dances and homages to history, sensational sound effects, luminous lighting and colorful costumes. It’s Rhythm of the Dance, celebrating 20 years of entertaining audiences in 50 countries from Siberia to Spain.
Rhythm of the Dance began as a show put together for a three-week tour of the United States. While the world and Irish champion dancers, traditional musicians and singers have never stopped, producer Kieran Cavanagh has strived to breathe fresh air into the traditionally rooted, authentic production. To that end, the show combines traditional dance and music with the most up-to-date stage technology. The two-hour dance and music extravaganza takes the audience on an exhilarating and exciting energy-packed time trip through the ages. More than 2000 years of dance and culture, from pre-Celtic times to the present day are all covered.
The show is fast-paced, with dancers having only seconds to make 25 costume changes during the show. Backing them are top-flight musicians who play a vast array of instruments from the traditional uilleann pipes, Irish bodhrán, fiddles, flutes, accordions, banjos and whistles. Dance and music are universal languages, and the show has been a hit in China, where it was presented on the Earth Dome stage before an audience of 50,000 and beamed to television audiences of 750 million. In Greece, the group performed at the 2500 year old Acropolis and In Russia, at the Kremlin Palace Theatre, the Ministry of Culture gave the show a special award. In 2015, Rhythm of the Dance played at the closing ceremony of the European Games in Azerbaijan.
Rhythm of the Dance has already entertained more than seven million people in its 20 years and with the updated format and latest production values, the goal is to entertain seven million more. You may think you’ve seen Irish dancing, but you haven’t seen Rhythm of the Dance.
