Title: Get In the Know with the Sea Turtle Protection Zone
Description:
Sea turtle unintended boat strikes have tripled in Florida since 1980, and nearly half of the interactions occur in south Florida, from Palm Beach to Miami-Dade counties. Learn about the Sea Turtle Protection Zone (STPZ), a voluntary zone created by Loggerhead Marinelife Center and Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research to help reduce human-related threats to sea turtles. This lecture will highlight major threats faced by sea turtles – particularly boating interactions – and explain how the STPZ uses public outreach, communication strategies, and voluntary slow-speed recommendations to promote safer boating practices. Join us to learn how you can help, and to gain a sneak peak of future steps aimed at evaluating program effectiveness and further reducing sea turtle injuries.
Speaker: Meghan Boone
Loggerhead Marinelife Center
Conservation Threat Reduction Coordinator
Registration closes at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27.
