SUMMARY:Sea Turtle Nest Excavations
DESCRIPTION:Join Explore Natural Martin and Ecological Associates to watch the excavation of a previously hatched sea turtle nest! \n\n\n\n\nSea turtles are one of Martin County’s most famous visitors\, with thousands coming to nest on our beaches from March through October. This July\, Martin County has partnered with Ecological Associates\, Inc. (EAI) to bring you a closer look at these amazing animals through this Sea Turtle Nesting Excavation program. \nThis program presents an opportunity for the public to observe firsthand the excavation of a loggerhead sea turtle nest by trained individuals permitted to conduct such activities by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). It also provides an opportunity to advocate for sea turtle conservation by addressing threats such as artificial beachfront lighting\, man-made obstructions to nesting females and emergent hatchlings\, and marine debris. \nThe program begins with a 10-15 minute sea turtle talk led by Martin County education specialists describing the species of sea turtles nesting on Florida beaches with a focus on the biology of the loggerhead sea turtle\, including the nesting process and statistics. Threats to sea turtles and the importance of the Dark\, Flat and Clean initiative are also discussed. EAI biologists then inventory the contents of a loggerhead nest that hatched at least 3 days prior to the event. The biologist displays the egg contents and explains the inventory process. There is a 5-10 minute question and answer segment that follows the program. Any hatchlings found in the egg chamber during the program are released according to FWC guidelines. EAI specializes in sea turtle monitoring and research and conducts all activities under FWC Marine Turtle Permits. \nDETAILS \nFREE program \nThe program begins at 8:15am and will last until 9:30am \nPlease wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear \nBring water\, sunscreen\, and bug spray \nMinors (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult

SUMMARY:The Notorious Ashley Gang Exhibit 1910-1924
DESCRIPTION:PERMANENT EXHIBIT \nJohn Ashley was an American outlaw\, bank robber\, bootlegger\, and occasional pirate active in southern Florida during the 1910s and 1920s. \nBetween 1915 and 1924\, the self-styled “King of the Everglades” or “Swamp Bandit” operated from various hideouts in the Florida Everglades. His gang robbed nearly $1 million from at least 40 banks while at the same time hijacking numerous shipments of illegal whiskey being smuggled into the state from the Bahamas. Indeed\, Ashley’s gang was so effective that rum-running on the Florida coast virtually ceased while the gang was active. His two-man raid on the West End in the Bahamas in 1924 marked the first time in over a century that American pirates had attacked a British Crown colony. \nAmong poor Florida “crackers”\, he was considered a folk hero who represented a symbol of resistance to bankers\, lawmen and wealthy landowners. Ashley’s activities also hindered Prohibition bootleggers in major cities\, whose importation of foreign liquor undermined local moonshiners. Even the newspapers of the era frequently compared him to Jesse James. Almost every major crime in Florida was blamed on Ashley and his gang and one Florida official called him the greatest threat to the state since the Seminole Wars. \nHis near 13-year feud with Palm Beach County Sheriff George B. Baker ended in the death of Ashley and his three lieutenants in 1924. \nAll permanent exhibits are included with Elliott Museum Regular Admission

SUMMARY:Wheels of Change Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:PERMANENT EXHIBIT \nFrom the Dawn of the Automobile to Cutting-Edge Innovation\nThe automobile didn’t just change how we travel — it transformed how we live\, work\, and connect. From early horseless carriages to sleek modern machines\, the evolution of the car mirrors over a century of cultural\, economic\, and technological change. \nAt the Elliott Museum\, The Wheels of Change brings that story to life — and it begins with a jaw-dropping display unlike anything you’ve seen in a museum before. \nABOUT OUR CAR RACKING SYSTEM\nIt’s not just for storage — it’s a moving piece of engineering art.\nOur one-of-a-kind\, three-story\, climate-controlled\, robotic car storage and retrieval system showcases over 50 extraordinary classic and antique cars in a way that’s as innovative as the vehicles themselves. With the push of a button\, the system springs into action\, retrieving a gleaming automobile and rotating it into view — an experience that turns history into theater. \nWHY IT’S UNIQUE\nFirst museum in the U.S. to integrate an advanced industrial-automation system into its public galleries.\nMaximizes space to display more of our automotive treasures while keeping them preserved.\nInteractive experience with kiosks\, curated media\, and storytelling that connects each vehicle to a moment in automotive history. \nA COLLECTION THAT MOVES YOU\nThe racking system is just part of our diverse transportation collection\, which also includes:\nOver 90 classic cars and trucks — with 50-55 featured in the automated system.\nVintage motorcycles\, including a rare 1915 Harley-Davidson.\nEarly bicycles honoring Sterling Elliott’s inventive spirit.\nA full-scale replica of the 1911 Hugh Willoughby Pelican hydro-aeroplane. \nThe Wheels of Change is more than a car exhibit — it’s a journey through the history of innovation\, from the first turn of the crank to the precision of modern robotics. Come see how far we’ve traveled… and where the road leads next. \nAll permanent exhibits are included with Elliott Museum Regular Admission
