A.C.T. Studio Theatre recognizes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a moving drama that tackles the difficult truth behind the hidden heartbreak one woman carried for the sake of love. “God Bless Roy Campanella” is a critically well-received one-woman play written by playwright and singer-songwriter Tom Flannery. The play explores deep themes of love, heart-wrenching burdens and hurtful memories revealed candidly during a late-night confessional video in a quiet living room.
Oscillating between heartbreak and disarming humor, Katie Morgan weaves through emotional territory spanning past romance, enduring silence and secret torment. She delivers a shattering exploration of survival, balanced with the tender emotions involved in laying her feelings bare. Katie draws a poignant parallel to the tragic life of Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella, using his post-accident resilience as a metaphor for navigating personal heartache and finding survival.
Playwright Tom Flannery chose the subject because he says domestic violence is pervasive and not talked about enough. He feels it’s a stain on our humanity, bubbling underneath the surface, and not comfortable to address—but very important to do so.
Staff of Port St. Lucie’s Inner Truth Project will join us for all performances and host a talkback on Sunday, Oct. 25. Inner Truth offers therapeutic services to survivors of sexual trauma and educates the community on prevention strategies. Their vision is to create a community free from gender violence and victim-blaming where survivors live with acceptance, understanding and peace.
Join us at A.C.T. Studio Theatre for this powerful story of what Katie Morgan ultimately endured for love. Performances are one weekend only, Oct. 23 – 25. For tickets and information, please visit actstudiotheatre.com or call (772) 932-8880. Tickets are $28. A.C.T. Studio Theatre is a nonprofit theater located in the Cedar Pointe Plaza, 2399 SE Ocean Blvd., Stuart.
