In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the highly dysfunctional Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy, sometimes chaotic, and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the eccentric community of misfits and their antics keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. The sharp dialogue has plenty of laughs, dark humor, and sentiment with a no-holds-barred approach to laugh-out-loud moments in this popular comedy.
Written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, “Dearly Departed” pokes fun at the Southern clan that never got along in life and isn’t doing any better facing death. This generates a lot of chuckles as the characters bicker and battle among themselves. Show director Richie Lester said, “If you find yourself feeling down with a bit of the Covid Blues, ‘Dearly Departed’ may be just the remedy you need. It has characters you’ll recognize at once, regardless of where you’re from.”
“Dearly Departed,” winner of six Drama-Logue Awards including Best Play Writing, will be presented at A.C.T. Studio Theatre on March 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20.
