Audubon’s Possum Long Nature Center and Nature Preserve

The Possum Long Nature Center is the home base for the Audubon of Martin County that was founded in 1955. The Nature Center is a small house built as an example of the frame building style used by the army at the secret World War II training facility at Camp Murphy in Jonathan Dickinson State Park in the 1940’s. In fact,  in 1946 the Army sold off the buildings, in whole or part and a substantial part of Audubon House was salvaged from Camp Murphy. This unique piece of Martin County’s history sits on a 5 acre nature preserve where you can explore the nature trail through pines, oaks, palmettos and enjoy a view of a small wetland area. Keep your eyes and ears open for birds such as red-bellied woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and osprey and also an array of native butterflies including Florida’s state butterfly- the zebra longwing.
