There’s more to Stuart than beautiful waterfront views and a charming small-town feel. Look a little closer and you’ll find more than a century of stories woven into its streets, buildings and neighborhoods.
Now, those stories have received national recognition.
The Downtown Stuart Historic District and East Stuart Historic District have officially been listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
The designation marks the culmination of a multi-year preservation effort led by the City of Stuart’s Community Redevelopment Agency, building on an updated survey of the city’s historic properties and documenting the architecture, cultural resources, and stories that make these two neighborhoods significant.
For visitors, it’s another reason to slow down and explore Stuart on foot.
A Historic Heart by the Water
Downtown Stuart has long served as the city’s historic commercial and civic center. Today, its beautifully preserved architecture, independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and waterfront setting give it the kind of character that invites you to wander without a particular destination in mind.

The National Register designation recognizes the district’s distinctive collection of historic buildings and its role in the development of Stuart.
While you’re exploring, look beyond the storefronts. Architectural details, historic facades, and landmarks tucked among the modern businesses offer glimpses into the community’s past.
And because Stuart’s historic downtown sits alongside the St. Lucie River, you can easily combine a little history with a waterfront stroll, a meal at a locally owned restaurant, or an afternoon of shopping.
Discover the Stories of East Stuart
Just east of downtown, East Stuart tells another important part of the community’s story.
East Stuart is Martin County’s oldest historically Black community, with more than a century of history and a rich cultural heritage. Generations of residents, businesses, churches, and community leaders helped shape the neighborhood and, in turn, the identity of Stuart itself.
The National Register recognition brings greater visibility to those stories and acknowledges the significant contributions of the people who have called East Stuart home.
For visitors interested in experiencing the destination beyond its postcard views, exploring Stuart’s historic neighborhoods offers a chance to connect with the people and stories that helped make the community what it is today.
