Title: Runoff to Resilience: Protecting the Indian River Lagoon
Description:
Nestled among East Florida’s coastal barrier islands, the majestic Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is 156 miles long and the most biologically diverse estuary in North America. Despite its vastness, the IRL is under threat. Pollutants and excess nutrients are creating an unhealthy environment for marine life, negatively impacting commercial and recreational fishing, tourism, and local economies. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is piloting a smart stormwater management system, Runoff to Resilience (R2R), to reduce water pollution and create healthier marine and freshwater environments for people and nature. Join TNC in Florida’s Executive Director, Greg Knecht, to learn how R2R is the first watershed scale, cost effective solution to improve water quality in the IRL and beyond.
Speaker: Greg Knecht, The Nature Conservancy in Florida, Executive Director
Biography:
With more than 30 years of experience working to protect, restore, and manage some of Florida’s most treasured landscapes, Greg has worked on projects from the restoration of Florida’s Everglades to vegetative mapping on the Wakulla River. With a focus on ecosystem scale activities that provide maximum positive impact for the environment, Greg has been fortunate to serve the citizens of Florida in both the public and non-profit sectors. Prior to joining TNC, Greg was focused on ensuring the quality of Florida’s waters by helping to establish standards, fund stormwater programs, permit restoration projects, and represented the State of Florida on numerous boards and working groups.
