Driving down US1, the land of the surrounding state park is white sand and orange vines. There are scrub palms and wildflowers, but inside the park gates, there is so much more. Jonathan Dickinson State Park reaches out through 10,500 acres, and weaved through every inch are possibilities of adventure. The most common destination for those who turn into the park are the mountain biking trails, which traverse hills, sand, roots, and jumps for a ride that keeps even the locals coming back, but even before visitors hit the trails, they are entranced with the natural beauty of the area. On either side of the road leading to the trail, the vast landscape is characterized by bright greens, oranges, and browns of the native Florida landscape, unchanged by the development of other regions. On the short drive to the trailhead, visitors can see deer, an extensive selection of native birds, and wildflowers characteristic to Florida. Jonathan Dickinson and its bike trails give visitors an opportunity to see up to 16 natural ecosystems, including Florida’s own pine flatwoods and sand pine scrub.
Once at the trails, visitors will find a bustling scene filled with locals and others who have traveled to ride in the park. It is a friendly and welcoming scene of laughs, stories, and sunshine. All ages take their rounds at the pump track, new and improved for a better warmup. Coming out fast from the trailhead are those who have already done their ride, the exhilaration lighting up the trailhead and exciting those getting their bikes ready. All riders make sure to bring their helmets, which are mandatory on the trails according to state park law.
Skill levels vary as well among those gathered at the trailhead, some going to the fully-paved bike trail and others spreading out through the three different levels of dirt trails, which are easily identifiable and navigable. A new regular of JD Park’s bike trails says of the trails, “My particular favorite trail is the last trail called Hare. It’s perfect for my skill level.” Moderate in difficulty, both experienced and first-time learners can enjoy the rides that Jonathan Dickinson offers. The trails also merge with each other at times to offer a balanced ride of challenging and relaxing.
An adventuring local adequately describes the best part of the trails: “The woods.” While enjoying the thrill of the ride, bikers are greeted with inspiring views of ancient dunes, bushes full of the rare Scrub Jay, and natural ponds down the hill with an alligator just peeking out of the water.
Jonathan Dickinson’s bike trails are certainly an adventure just waiting for an eager rider to flash down their hills and jumps. For upcoming events and more information about the trails, please visit clubscrub.org, and plan your visit today.
