Inspired by the July celebrations of the founding of our country, A.C.T. Studio Theatre will present a powerful theatrical piece that offers wonderful insight into a misunderstood historical figure. “Pass My Imperfections Lightly By” by Vaughn McBride is an emotionally resonant play that brings a nuanced and sympathetic portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of President Abraham Lincoln who served in office from 1861 until his assassination in 1865.
Mary Todd Lincoln is in many ways America’s first First Lady, having served in that role during the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Her awareness of the political pulse of the country was instrumental in the election of her husband as president. Her ego-driven idea of what the leader of a nation deserves resulted in changing the White House into a figurehead residence fit for a president. Mrs. Lincoln was an emancipated woman.
But with the horror of witnessing her husband’s assassination, Mrs. Lincoln was devastated and never fully recovered. The immense pressure of the war and her sons’ deaths took a huge toll on her physical and emotional health.
“Pass My Imperfections Lightly By” tackles the complexity of one of the most controversial First Ladies in American history. It takes a refreshing look at Mrs. Lincoln’s life, and offers valuable insight into the tragedies she endured, fostering sympathy for her character and taking audiences on an emotional journey.
