Rutter is a master at exploring voices and sounds to give the listener a variety of experiences. In the “Mass of the Children,” he utilizes children’s voices in contrast to adults’ in presenting what could have been a standard Mass. The lightness of the children’s voices produces a “sweetness” that most masses do not feel.
