SUMMARY:Leo Kottke
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist/composer Leo Kottke is one of the foremost finger-style guitar players in the world and he has the degree to prove it. In 2008\, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts awarded Kottke a doctorate in performance music for redefining the potential of the guitar. “Kottke is an American musical icon who has extended the tradition established by musical greats such as Chet Atkins and Merle Travis and John Fahey\,” said Scott Emmons\, dean of the school. “Over the past 35 years\, no single guitarist has influenced an emerging performance style to the extent that Kottke has influenced finger-style guitar.” \nLeo Kottke was born in Georgia\, but his family moved around and he was influenced by folk and delta blues music\, especially the work of Mississippi John Hurt. As a boy\, he played the violin and trombone\, but abandoned both to the guitar by the age of 11. In the 1960s\, after a stint in the military\, Kottke settled in the Twin Cities area and began playing at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. His debut album\, 12 String Blues\, was recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder. \nAfter sending tapes to John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Tacoma label and released 6-and-12-String Blues\, known as the “Armadillo album.” Fahey’s agent signed Kottke to a contract at Capitol Records\, and his first major label record\, Mudlark\, was released in 1971. \nKottke wanted to remain an instrumentalist\, but Mudlark and albums like The Greenhouse\, My Feet are Smiling and Ice Water positioned him as a singer/songwriter in the golden era of the singer/songwriter. His last album for Capitol\, Chewing Pine\, put him in the Top 30; his touring had brought him fans throughout the United States and the world. In 2002\, Kottke collaborated with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, recording “Clone” and “Sixty-Six Steps.” He has toured with flamenco and jazz guitar virtuosos Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola\, and his composition\, “Ice Fields\,” a suite for amplified steel-string guitar and chamber orchestra\, is considered a milestone for guitar concerti. \nThroughout his career\, Kottke has had to deal with partial hearing loss from an accident and severe tendinitis in his right hand\, which almost ended his career. He maintained a relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and its unique guitar program\, the only one in the world where a student may choose to specialize in finger-style\, jazz\, classical or flamenco guitar. In 1985\, he performed at the first American Finger-Style Festival\, held on campus. He has been served as an advisor and visitor speaking to students about “The Realities of a Life Devoted to Music.” “Kottke is a fabulous role model\,” says Dean Emmons\, “His personal integrity\, humor\, self-effacing style and uncommon musical talent combine to provide many lessons for our aspiring music students.” \nLeo Kottke’s peers have honored him\, as well. He has two Grammy nominations\, Performance Magazine’s “Best Instrumentalist” award and induction into the Guitar Player Hall of Fame. Perhaps in tribute to his decision not to play the trombone as an adult\, and with tongue in cheek\, he was awarded a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the University of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. \nIn August 2020\, Kottke and Mike Gordon announced a new collaboration\, the album\, Noon\, released that month. It was Kottke’s first studio album since 2005 and Kottke had almost given up on recording. In a Rolling Stone interview with Gordon\, he said that he had no heart for social media and that it’s always been about playing live. Gordon changed his mind. The new album\, Jared Smoloff wrote\, was “full of lilting grooves that go on wild musical tangents-the result of two artists who have dedicated their lives to mastering their instruments as much as they can.” \n“When we play\, it sounds like three people\,” Gordon said. “There’s a bass going on and there’s a melody and there’s an accompaniment\, and it’s all built in. As soon as your brain can see the pattern\, he buries it. He’s like this iconic American treasure living in his own bubble. He’ll travel the country listening to The Lone Ranger series from the 1950s in its entirety.” \nKottke himself has likened his singing voice to “geese farts on a muggy day.” It’s a great thing for all of us that the music is the key and he is the master.

SUMMARY:A Peter White Christmas with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala
DESCRIPTION:Event Times: 6pm and 8:30pm\nThe very best way to start the holiday season is with a White Christmas…a Peter White Christmas. The legendary guitarist returns to Stuart to usher in the holidays with saxophonist extraordinaire Mindi Abair and multi-instrumentalist Vincent Ingala. For contemporary jazz lovers and lovers of Christmas\, it doesn’t get any better than this. \nPeter White\, who co-wrote the song “Time Passages” and played on Al Stewart’s Top 10 album\, The Year of the Cat\, has always loved Christmas. He grew up in Luton\, near London\, and remembers fun and family. “My earliest memories of Christmas were probably not much different from many other people: snowflakes\, tinsel\, Santa Claus\, reindeer\, and the opening of presents\, surrounded by family\,” he said. “As a child\, my father taught me to play Christmas music on my first instrument\, the recorder\, and my love for Christmas music has endured throughout the years. I hope this tour will be an opportunity for many smooth jazz fans to enjoy their favorite Christmas songs in a family setting. You know\, I might even bring my recorder!” \nWhite’s 17th album\, Light of Day\, is scheduled for release this year. \nFlorida native Mindi Abair is a self-proclaimed “Christmas dork.” “Growing up\, my family would get together for Christmas every year\,” she said. “My grandmother would cook oyster stuffing and rhubarb pie\, and we’d play and sing together. I still make rhubarb pie every year in her honor. My grandmother gave me great advice early on: “If you play the piano\, you can be the life of any party!” She was an opera singer and would sit and play piano and sing Christmas songs. My father would take over and play more rock/blues/jazz versions of the songs and we’d all sing. Of course\, I’d pull out my sax and play along. What an amazing way to grow up\, with music surrounding me and weaving into my life so seamlessly.” \nAbair has taken her love for Christmas to a new level\, with her latest release\, 2024’s I Can’t Wait for Christmas\, a 10-song collection on Pretty Good for a Girl Records of holiday classics that take listeners straight to the heart of the holiday season\, blending timeless classics with fresh\, soulful originality. \nVincent Ingala brings his matinee idol looks and incredible talent to the party. He has already been at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts and is a wizard instrumentally\, playing everything from tenor sax to piano\, drums\, guitar\, bass and vocals. He is known for his consummate musicianship and fun-loving stage presence. His latest release is 2004’s Escape with Me. \nIngala also has clear memories of Christmas Past. “I can vividly remember not being able to fall asleep while waiting for Santa Claus to arrive on Christmas Eve\,” he said. “Somehow\, though\, he always managed to get the job done while I was sleeping and before I could catch him! I would sneak down multiple times with my flashlight to get a sneak peek. Memories such as these I will always continue to hold in my heart\, and they are what make Christmas a very magical time of the year.” \nIf you’ve been dreaming of a White Christmas\, you’re covered. A Peter White Christmas has the music you love\, and you won’t even miss the snow.

SUMMARY:Acoustic Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:The first time Acoustic Alchemy came to the United States\, the British group arrived courtesy of Richard Branson. It was the mid 1980s\, and they answered an ad in a London paper for in-flight entertainment on Virgin Atlantic. They went to an audition and won first prize\, a return flight to London. “We got the gig\,” member Greg Carmichael said. “Three of us trouped up and down the aisles\, playing. We couldn’t hear each other\, but the audience loved it.” \nThe band’s first stop was Nashville\, where people were interested in their work\, but when their manager\, Stewart Coxhead\, got a call about a three-record deal\, he said\, “Yeah\, okay\, who is this really?” In spite of that\, he remained their manager until his death in 2015\, and his son now manages the group. It’s part of the family feeling that Acoustic Alchemy has always had. It’s about the music\, not the drama. \nThat record deal\, surprising as it was\, changed their lives. “One of the things about having a record deal is that it’s like doing exams\,” Carmichael said. “You have to come up with the goods. You have to write\, record\, and meet deadlines. That kind of pressure is really good. Now\, like so many who don’t have a big label\, you make your own agenda.” \nCarmichael and fellow Alchemist Nick Webb were friends and writing partners from the beginning. “We saw eye-to-eye on music\,” Carmichael said. “We were very different people but the slight differences in personality worked to our own advantage. He was larger-than-life. He made the most out of life and really lived it. In 1996\, our biggest year on the road\, we toured most of Europe\, the Far East\, South America\, and the United States. We finished just before Christmas and Nick said he didn’t feel great. He went to the doctor and was eventually diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Nick and I had finished writing (the album) Positive Thinking and were about to record it. I couldn’t do it on my own. The record label told me to take my time and there was lots of support from the fans. It made me feel like we should try to keep it. Miles Gilderdale was playing electric guitar in the band. He stepped into Nick’s shoes; he picked up an acoustic guitar and learned all the tunes. He’s a great guy\, as well.” \nCarmichael began his musical career on the ukulele when he was 8 or 9. Then his father took him to see the Beatles live. He was 10 and his career path was set. “That did it for me\,” he said. “My parents got me a guitar and lessons\, and I carried on. I always knew what I wanted to do. I was lucky to be able to do it. I went to a college of music with a four-year grant and studied classical guitar\, but I never wanted to be a solo performer. It was more fun being in a band\, part of a team. We all carry each other.” \nCarmichael said that both fans and first-timers can expect a lively show. “It is quite a dynamic live show\,” he said. “We do mix it up. Each (of the guys) is a talented musician. On CDs\, the music is more controlled\, and we don’t let it rip. On stage\, there is audience interaction\, and we feed off each other. It’s nice if they know the CD\, but when they hear it live\, it’s different.” \nFor Carmichael and the band\, it’s about having fun\, being on the road\, and loving what they’re doing. “We come out (after the show) and sign things and talk\,” he said. “So many have been fans from the beginning. The fans grow up with you. Now they’re retired and have the time to come to see you. As an instrumental band\, we’re slightly faceless. Most bands have lead singers\, but we have no vocals\, just instrumentals. Some (fans) didn’t even realize we’re a UK band\, but they’ve enjoyed the music over the years.” \nThe band releases new albums infrequently. Their previous studio album was Roseland\, released in 2011\, and they released a live double album\, Live in London\, in 2014. A few years ago\, they released 33 1/3\, an album that again defies easy description\, touching on jazz\, blues\, and Caribbean. The band has long had a history of incorporating the sounds of the islands into their songs. The album exemplifies what Acoustic Alchemy is all about and why the name is so apt. “It suits us\,” Carmichael said. “It’s a good name. It’s not about a person; it’s about a band. Acoustic Alchemy means a blend\, a combination of lots of different styles. Alchemy suits us. It implies a magic blend.” \nThis “G Force” of Greg Carmichael\, Gilderdale\, Grainger\, Grainger\, (and White) has been defying gravity for years. Come along for the ride.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Crystal Gayle
DESCRIPTION:She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2017 by her sister\, Loretta Lynn. The Academy of Country Music recognized her with a 2016 Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award for her lifetime achievements in country music. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Indeed\, Crystal Gayle has been honored by country music and loved by fans for decades. Best known for her signature song\, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue\,” she’s also had hits with “You’ve Been Talking in Your Sleep\,” “When I Dream\,” “Half the Way\,” and her duet with Eddie Rabbit\, “Just You and I.” She has released more than 20 Number One hits and has been honored by the Grammys\, the Country Music Association\, the Academy of Country Music\, and the American Music Awards. \nBrenda Gail Webb’s sister\, Loretta Lynn\, suggested the name Crystal for her younger sister. Brenda Lee was a star with Decca Records\, and to avoid confusion\, Webb took the name Crystal Gayle when she signed with the label. Gayle grew up the youngest of eight children\, and sister Loretta has said that Crystal was also “a coal miner’s daughter” before she was a star. While she was still in school\, she signed her first recording contract. Her debut single\, “I’ve Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes\,” was written by Lynn and reached the Top 25 on national charts. Three more singles were released over the next three years. Her warm\, resonant song styling\, unique as a fingerprint\, captured audiences not usually tuned in to country music. \nGayle’s first album began a roll out of smash singles to come. Wrong Road Again became her debut Top 10 record and “I’ll Get Over You” her first Number One single. By her fourth album\, We Must Believe in Magic\, she became the first female artist in country music history to achieve platinum album sales. Driving the engine was the song that became her signature\, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” That song introduced Crystal Gayle to the world. She became a household name\, and her glamour and mystique made her an “in demand” artist. From symphony halls to Carnegie Hall to the London Palladium\, the Crystal phenomenon swept on. There were CBS and HBO specials\, and she appeared in Bob Hope’s special\, “On the Road to China.” She has hosted the American Music Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards. \nBreaking through the usual genre barriers has allowed Crystal Gayle to do projects close to her heart. One of the most meaningful was Crystal Gayle Sings the Heart and Soul of Hoagy Carmichael\,” a critically acclaimed collection of 15 of the great composer’s favorite classics\, including “Stardust” and “Two Sleepy People.” She has said that meeting Carmichael and getting to sing with him was a personal high in her career. \nShe has not neglected the youngest audiences\, either\, with In My Arms\, a collection of lullabies. She appeared on Sesame Street and sang with Big Bird\, and she contributed to Songs from the Neighborhood\, a tribute album to Mr. Rogers that won a Grammy in 2006. \nCrystal Gayle lives in Nashville when she is not touring\, and spends time with her husband\, two children\, and two grandsons. SUMMARY:Elton Dan and The Rocket Band
DESCRIPTION:Dan Gasser\, the lead singer and pianist of Elton Dan and The Rocket Band\, first saw Elton John at Caesars Palace. Since then\, he has seen him 26 more times\, including seven times during his final “Yellow Brick Road” tour. Gasser has been a fan of John’s music and his humanitarian work for many years\, and in 2015\, to honor John\, he formed The Rocket Band. \n“Elton John is my all-time favorite artist\, and it was my destiny to lead a project that pays homage to his music\,” he said. “Our shows are a heartfelt tribute to the greatest musical artist ever\, and I want the audience to feel that. I want to immerse them in a memorable musical experience.” \nThe band performs songs from the seven iconic Elton John albums of the 1970s and 1980s. There are so many wonderful songs to choose from\, and you may well hear “I’m Still Standing\,” “Philadelphia Freedom\,” “Crocodile Rock\,” and “Rocket Man.” There might well be duets\, deeper cuts and band favorites like “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart\, “Madman Across the Water\,” “Levon\,” “Tiny Dancer\,” and “Pinball Wizard.” Through it all\, Gasser’s stage presence and rapport with the audience\, the great piano playing\, over-the-top costumes\, and fabulous energy convince you that you are seeing Sir Elton up close and personal. \nSince its inception in 2015\, the band has performed more than 400 shows in 38 states. During the 2024 season\, they played at Kool Deadwood Nights in South Dakota to an estimated crowd of 18\,000. Internationally\, they have played sold-out shows at the famed Wynn Palace Resort in Macau\, and tour dates for Canada\, South America\, and Europe are in the works. \nThe family-friendly band believes in giving back\, inspired by Elton John‘s philanthropy. Based in the Kansas City area\, they have raised more than $170\,000 for Children’s Mercy Hospital and more than $300\,000 for The Dream Factory\, an organization that raises money to grant wishes to children with life-limiting illnesses. \nIn addition to Gasser\, the band includes Dean Christopher on keyboard\, Wes Faulconer on percussion\, Paul Greenlease on bass\, Bill Graham on drums\, Ben Eisiminger on keyboard\, and Deb Cordero on vocals. \nDean Christopher performed for a Led Zeppelin tribute band before coming to Elton Dan. A fan of Elton John’s music\, when there was an opening in the band for a keyboard player\, he jumped at the opportunity. This season he will move to lead guitar\, where his emotional\, animated personality will bring electricity to the stage. \nWes Faulconer has had an impressive career as a drummer and percussionist\, deeply rooted in the Kansas City music scene. A fan of motorcycles and fast cars\, he brings the same high energy to Elton Dan and The Rocket Band. He has an extraordinary ability to create the many diverse sounds and background enhancements for which Elton John is known. \nPaul Greenlease honed his skills at The Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles and toured with a number of bands\, including as part of the Armed Forces Entertainment Tour in 2010\, supporting troops in Kuwait and Iraq. He is a tremendous bass player who moves from rock to reggae and jazz to pop. \nBill Graham is in his fourth year with Elton Dan. He studied music at Missouri Western State University and completed a music performance degree in percussion. He is a fan of writing drum music and is working on a drum set book\, with backing charts\, for musicians of all ages and abilities. \nDeb Cordero thrives in the role of backup vocalist\, which requires integrating and supporting Dan and the band on every song. She is also featured on two Kiki Dee songs\, as lead singer\, and in a duet. Deb has performed in Las Vegas and has done extensive jingle work for accounts like Pizza Hut and the Kansas City Royals. \nIf you love Elton John\, they’ll be singing Your Song. Don’t Go Breaking Your Heart and miss it.

SUMMARY:John Németh
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in the early 1990s in the muddy potato fields of Boise\, Idaho\, John Nemeth was drawn to the hard-edged hip-hop sound and rock bands of the day. Boise\, Idaho is not usually thought of as a home of the blues\, but it was where Nemeth grew up\, the youngest son of a miner who fled the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and married a local girl. His mother took him to concerts when he was two\, his third-grade teacher taught him to sing\, and his elder siblings were into rock and country. As a teen\, he played in a band called Fat John and the 3 Slims with his friend\, Tom Moore\, who sat behind him in algebra class. That band is still legendary in the Boise area. Moore introduced him to the Junior Wells and Buddy Guy classic\, “Hoodoo Man Blues.“ “That was it\,” Nemeth said. “I started singing along with him. I was 14.” \nIn a 2022 interview with Robin Caudell\, Nemeth explained how he found the blues after Moore gave him “the greatest mixtape of all time.” “He started with Charley Patton and moved into Robert Johnson\, Blind Lemon Jefferson\, Blind Willie McTell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, BB King\, Albert Collins\, and Lightning Hopkins\,” he said. “It was fantastic. I really loved it.” \nBy 2000\, Nemeth was supplying backup to Junior Watson and fronting his own band\, The Jacks. He self-published two albums and in 2004 relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. He signed a contract with Blind Pig Records and his national debut album\, Magic Touch\, in 2007\, caused Living Blues Magazine to say that it gave hope “that the blues will survive.” In 2008\, he was recruited by Elvin Bishop to perform and contribute vocal tracks to Bishop’s Grammy-nominated album\, The Blues Roll On. \nNemeth released two more albums with Blind Pig\, and both hit No. 6 on the Billboard Blues Chart. He began his long string of Blues Music Award nominations\, with 20 at last count. He won two Blues Blast Music Awards: Best New Artist Debut Recording and the Sean Costello Rising Star Award. He followed up with two independently released albums in 2012\, Blues Live and Soul Live. At Electraphonic Studio\, along with producer Scott Bomar and his classic Memphis Soul band\, the Bo-Keys\, Nemeth created an album of revisited Soul classics\, Memphis Grease\, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Blues Chart. He won the 2014 BMA for Best Soul Blues Male Artist and Memphis Grease won Best Soul Blues Album in 2015. \nIn 2017\, Nemeth released Feelin’ Freaky on his own Memphis Grease label. The album crushed all barriers of style and genre with all original songs that defied pigeon-holing and drew from his strong influence in blues and R & B\, as well as contemporary sounds in hip-hop and rock and roll. In 2019\, he and his band of young players\, The Blue Dreamers\, with guitar phenom John Hay\, drummer Danny Banks and bass player Matt Wilson\, released Nemeth’s 10th album\, 2020’s Stronger Than Strong. Again\, he showed his ability to blend retro and modern blues and soul into compelling music that is simultaneously old and new. \nIn 2021\, Nemeth was nominated for the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award by the Blues Music Association and in 2023\, he won the ”Instrumentalist – Harmonica” category at the Blues Music Awards. May Be the Last Time was also named “Traditional Blues Album of the Year.” \nJohn Nemeth has said that his career and life has been a wild trip and he’s having a good time. You can bet the blues that you will\, too.

SUMMARY:The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
DESCRIPTION:There is a wealth of history behind The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In 1977\, The Dirty Dozen Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud\, but antiquated\, traditions. Social aid and pleasure clubs dated back more than a century\, to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance. The clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements\, and brass bands\, early predecessors of the jazz we know\, would often follow the funeral processions\, playing somber dirges until the family of the deceased was out of earshot. Then they let loose\, playing jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. \nBy the late 1970s\, the tradition had largely died out. In 1977\, The Dirty Dozen Social Aid and Pleasure Club assembled a group as the house band and early on\, it adopted the name The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Now\, more than 45 years since its founding\, the Grammy-winning group has taken the traditional foundations of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres including bebop\, jazz\, funk\, and R&B/soul. This unique sound\, described by the band as a “musical gumbo\,” has allowed the Dirty Dozen Band to become a world-famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performance. They have toured five continents\, played in more than 30 countries\, and collaborated with a wide range of artists from Modest Mouse to Norah Jones.\nThe seven-member ensemble consists of Roger Lewis on baritone sax and vocals\, Gregory Davis on trumpet and vocals\, Kirk Joseph on Sousaphone\, Trevarri Huff-Boone on tenor sax and vocals\, Stephen Walker on trombone and vocals\, Julian Addison on drums\, and Takeshi Shimmura on guitar. \nOffbeat magazine called the Dirty Dozen Brass Band “arguably the most influential ensemble to emerge in New Orleans over the last 25 years. Its sway on the brass scene has been staggering\, spawning bands like the ReBirth\, New Birth\, Hot 8\, Li’l Rascals\, Soul Rebels\, and just about every other young brass ensemble presently performing.” \nThe Dirty Dozen Brass Band won a 2023 Grammy for Best American Roots Performance. Whatever your roots\, don’t miss this toe-tapping\, line-dancing\, arms-waving rollicking good time. They call it musical gumbo. Bon appetit!

SUMMARY:Broadway with Heart
DESCRIPTION:She’s the great-granddaughter of Teddy Roosevelt. He’s the great-grandson of Russian Cantor Yacov Sanzofsky. Lovingly known as M & M\, husband and wife Melinda Jackson and Michael Kessler have been working together for more than 30 years as producers\, directors\, writers\, composers\, choreographers\, and\, oh yes\, performers who have appeared on Broadway\, in Las Vegas\, at Radio City Music Hall\, and in theaters around the world. Their show\, Broadway with Heart\, is a tribute to the best Broadway has had to offer\, from Kiss Me Kate\, to Chicago\, to Fiddler on the Roof\, to Phantom of the Opera. Along the way\, they share stories of working with people like Bob Fosse\, Joe Layton\, and Jim Rado. \nThe two met in a ballet class in New York City in the 1980s. In an interview with Marvin Glassman in Miamiartzine magazine\, Kessler said they always knew they would make a great team. “Part of our joy of dancing is not just the talent\, but the commitment to rehearse\, observe\, and care about each other\, both on and off the stage\, to be our best as performers and people.” \nFor Broadway with Heart\, the two will act\, dance\, and sing with five other cast members as they portray aging performers who travel back in time to recreate their favorite moments on Broadway and films. If it touches on their own lives\, it’s no accident. \nThe two share anecdotes from their many years in the theater while recreating memorable scenes and songs from Broadway. You’ll be humming along to “America\,” “Jesus Christ Superstar\,” “Life is a Cabaret\,” “Oh\, What a Beautiful Morning\,” and “Tonight.” The choreography is by Kessler and the costumes by Jackson. They are a full-service team. \nM & M have not only toured with their own original shows. The two performed in Tommy Tune’s Broadway show\, Grand Hotel\, choreographed a Winter Olympics and the U.S. Pro Gymnastics tour and directed and choreographed the 30th anniversary tour of Hair\, in which both appeared earlier. \nAgain\, in an interview with Marvin Glassman\, Kessler explained their goal for this production. “We wanted to create on stage a history of great Broadway and film musicals from an era before we were born to more contemporary shows like Hamilton. We never worked with Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly\, so by becoming this imaginary veteran show business couple\, we could share the thrilling scenes and songs that were created by so many legendary choreographers\, dancers\, and directors.” \nIt’s a festival of Broadway. Come hear the music of the night.

SUMMARY:All Night Long - The Hits of Lionel Richie
DESCRIPTION:Jassen Allen began singing at church in Iowa. A music teacher took him under her wing\, hoping the young Black man would become another Simon Estes\, Iowa’s famed African American bass-baritone. The teacher convinced Allen to enter talent shows at the Iowa State Fair. \n“I never won the talent shows\, but I got better and better and learned how to be an individual performer\,” Allen said. The young artist realized that performing as a solo act was what he wanted to do\, and he found his first performing jobs at theme parks in Florida and Texas. From there\, he was a production singer on a variety of cruise ship lines. He spent 10 years seeing the world and honing his craft. Then it was time to settle down on dry land. He moved to Los Angeles. \nAllen became “a very good waiter” and also found work as a performer. He was cast in the Civic Light Opera’s award-winning production of Dream Girls and became a popular singer for special events from Los Angeles to Europe. In 2006\, Allen moved to Las Vegas\, where again\, he was “a very good waiter.” After several rough years\, he established himself as a Las Vegas entertainer and wrote a tribute show to Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston. The show\, a hit\, was held at Ron DeCar’s Event Center. “I finally had my name in lights on the Strip\,” Allen said. “Well\, it was down the Strip a ways\, but it was there.” \nNow\, the Vegas headliner has put together a tribute to the legendary Lionel Richie\, called All Night Long. Richie\, the songwriter and co-founder of the Commodores\, wrote hits like “Easy\,” “Three Times a Lady\,” and “Still\,” as well as Billboard Hot 100 single for Kenny Rogers\, “Lady.” He recorded “Endless Love” with Diana Ross\, and it is still among the top 20 best-selling singles of all time. Richie has won four Grammy Awards\, including Song of the Year for “We Are the World\,” which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson\, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. \nAllen considers his show not only a tribute\, but a celebration. It’s a party that will last “All Night Long.” You may be “Dancing on the Ceiling\,” but you won’t be taking it “Easy.”

SUMMARY:Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials
DESCRIPTION:Chicago is home to the blues. So many great artists have come from the Windy City\, among them Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials\, a group that has been standing tall among Chicago blues greats for more than 30 years. The band’s big sound\, fueled by Lil’ Ed’s rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending\, along with his soulful vocals\, is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. The Chicago Sun-Times says\, “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.” \nLil’ Ed Williams comes to the blues naturally. Born in Chicago in 1955\, in the heart of the city’s tough West Side\, Ed grew up surrounded by music. His uncle\, Chicago slide guitar king and master songwriter J.B. Hutto taught him how to feel\, not just play the blues. He was playing the guitar\, and then the drums and bass\, by the time he was 12. Both he and his half-brother\, Pookie Young\, the band’s bassist\, learned from their uncle. “J.B. taught me everything I know\,” Lil’ Ed said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.” \nEd and Pookie spent their teen years making music together\, and in 1975\, formed their first incarnation of The Blues Imperials. They earned $6 for their first gig and split it four ways. They played in clubs at night; during the day\, Ed worked at a car wash and Pookie drove a school bus. Eventually\, Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer heard of them\, just as he was looking for some of Chicago’s younger blues musicians. “Ed and his band had a real good reputation\,” he said. “I knew Ed was a hot slide player\, but I had no idea what he and the band were really capable of. I asked them to come down to the studio and cut a couple of songs. I never expected what happened.” \nWhat happened was that a band that had never been inside a recording studio treated it like a club. They recorded their two songs and kept playing. After 10 songs\, Iglauer offered them a full album contract. Twelve of the songs that were eventually recorded became their debut album\, Roughhousin’. The Village Voice said it might be “the blues album of the year.” \nSoon after\, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton joined the band and things took off. Garret’s risk-taking rhythm guitar work and Littleton’s unpredictable\, old-school drumming were the perfect complements to Lil’ Ed’s and Pookie’s rambunctious playing. With their album\, Chicken\, Gravy\, & Biscuits\, doors opened. The band toured relentlessly and coalesced as a unit. Their spontaneous and unpredictable live shows were legendary. \nLil’s Ed & The Blues Imperials have played the Chicago Blues Festival multiple times\, and have appeared at jazz festivals in New Orleans\, Portland\, Tampa Bay\, San Diego and worldwide. Their fan base\, known as “Ed Heads\,” appreciated each of the eight Alligator records released between 1986 and 2012\, and with each one\, the band’s stature grew. They took home the Living Blues Award for Best Live Performer three years in a row and won the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band of the Year twice. \nFor Ed Williams and his merry band\, it’s about the music and the family. “We’re family\, and families stay together\,” he said. \nNight after night\, gig after gig\, the musical family called Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials brings their big\, dynamic Chicago blues sounds to fans around the country and around the world. \nWelcome to the family.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Coco Montoya
DESCRIPTION:When your teacher and mentor is iconic blues guitarist Albert Collins\, you listen. That’s what guitar virtuoso and soul-deep singer Coco Montoya did when Collins told him to “Just play what you feel\, be real about it and enjoy yourself.” \nIn a career spanning more than five decades\, Montoya has followed that advice. Self-taught and left-handed\, he learned from Collins and John Mayall while putting his own stamp on every song. \nHenry “Coco” Montoya was born in Santa Monica\, California into a working-class family. Growing up\, he listened to his parents’ collection of big band\, jazz\, salsa\, doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll. His first love was the drums\, and he got his first set at 11. He got a guitar two years later. “I’m sure the Beatles had something to do with this\,” he said. “I wanted to make notes as well as beats.” \nGuitar\, though\, remained Montoya’s secondary instrument\, turning his love for drumming into a profession and playing in area rock bands while in his teens. He was becoming an in-demand drummer and then\, in 1969\, he saw Albert King open a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Iron Butterfly concert. He was transformed. “After King got done playing\, my life was changed\,” Montoya said. “When he played\, the music went right into my soul. It grabbed me so emotionally that I had tears welling up in my eyes. Nothing had ever affected me to this level. He showed me what music and playing the blues were all about. I knew that was what I wanted to do.” \nIn the mid-1970s\, Montoya had a chance meeting with Albert Collins. “Albert was coming through Los Angeles and needed to borrow my drum set\, which I left at the club where he was going to be playing\,” he said. “I went down to see his show that night and it just tore my head off. The thing that I had seen and felt with Albert King came pouring back on me when I saw Albert Collins.” \nCollins hired Montoya as his drummer and mentored him on the guitar. “We’d sit in hotel rooms for hours and play guitar\,” Montoya said. “He’d play that beautiful rhythm of his and just have me play along. He was like a father to me. Collins called Montoya “his son” and Montoya learned everything he could from the man known as the “Master of the Telecaster.” \nNeeding a more regular paycheck\, Montoya took a job tending bar and jamming on weekends. Legendary British musician John Mayall heard him playing Otis Rush’s All Your Love (I Miss Loving). Soon after\, Mayall asked Montoya to join the famous Bluesbreakers\, filling the shoes of previous Bluesbreakers guitarists like Eric Clapton\, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. For the next 10 years\, Montoya toured the world and recorded with Mayall on seven albums. \nMontoya’s debut as a bandleader came in 1995 with Gotta Mind to Travel. The album became an instant fan favorite and made it clear that Montoya ranked among the best players on the contemporary scene. Two more albums quickly followed. \nIn 2000\, Montoya’s album\, Suspicion\, exploded onto the scene and his fan base grew exponentially. After two more highly successful albums: 2002’s Can’t Look Back and 2007’s Dirty Deal on Alligator\, Montoya signed with Ruf Records\, cutting several albums. He returned to Alligator in 2017 with Hard Truth and 2019 with Coming in Hot. The UK’s Blues Matters commented that “Montoya unleashes one career-topping performance after another.” \nHis latest album\, Writing on the Wall\, features 13 tracks filled with Montoya’s fierce guitar and passion-laden vocals. It is also the first to feature his long-time road band. Despite his busy recording schedule\, Montoya remains a “road warrior\,” touring virtually non-stop around the world. He has a reputation for his live performances\, with Billboard saying “In a world of blues guitar pretenders\, Coco Montoya is the real McCoy. He exudes power and authority. Be prepared to get scorched by the real thing.” Come play with fire.

SUMMARY:B2Wins: Music Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:It’s a long way from the mean streets of the Brazilian favelas to the tree-lined campus of an Iowa university\, yet that’s the extraordinary journey musical twins Walter and Wagner Caldas made. The thirty-something-year-olds got their first instruments\, violins\, from their father\, who had a small woodshop and made instruments for a local orchestra designed to keep kids off the streets. The boys took lessons\, joined the orchestra at 12\, and began traveling outside the favela. They also memorized pop songs by Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson. \nThe orchestra played for celebrities and dignitaries and the twins\, with their high-energy takes on classical music\, stood out. After a performance in Rio de Janeiro in 2006\, an NPR producer did a story on them\, and they began to imagine life outside the favela. “Art\, in general\, it takes you somewhere\, somehow\,” Walter said. “It gives everyone a vision of the world they didn’t have\, including me.” \nIn the summer of 2006\, the president of the World Food Prize\, Ambassador Kenneth Quinn\, was planning an event to celebrate people who had made a difference in the availability of food in the world. He heard the NPR segment on the Caldas twins and invited them to Iowa to perform. They were given visas\, travel and a three-day stay at a Des Moines hotel. They weren’t nervous\, even though they decided on their program 10 minutes before they performed\, Walter on the violin and Wagner on the ukulele. “They dazzled\,” Quinn said. “They had the energy of youth; they just had this verve to them. You could see it and feel it in the room.” \nTheir unique style led Benjamin Allen\, then president of the University of Northern Iowa\, to approach them through a translator and offer them full scholarships to study music at the university. “We thought it was just talk\,” Walter said. “A month later\, we started receiving stuff in Brazil from UNI\, everything in English\, with pictures of the dorms\, and I was like\, ‘Oh\, my God\, we’re really going.’” \nThe twins didn’t tell their parents because they knew their mom and dad would be afraid for them. They got help filling out the applications from others. Neither twin could speak or write English then and people in Brazil made them signs in English to help them navigate the airports. \nLearning English was hard\, and the twins were often homesick\, but they never regretted their decision to come to America. “Having each other was a big part of it\,” Walter said. “We never let each other feel sorry about anything in our lives.” \nAs they performed at university events and around town\, music became more important than classes. They started a band\, the B2wins\, which they pronounced B Twins for Brazilian Twins\, where they put their own classical spin on the popular music they grew up loving. The high-energy shows grew popular throughout Iowa and the Midwest\, and they became full-time musicians. They both married. Their American dream was becoming a reality. \nIn 2015\, they were invited to appear at the 80/35 Music Festival in downtown Des Moines\, where there would be thousands in the audience. No one except his wife and Walter knew that Wagner had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and would probably lose his left arm. Wagner thought he would never play the ukulele again\, so he downloaded instructions to teach himself the piano. Grueling chemo followed\, the cancer responded well to treatment and the amputation was canceled. The band played in his absence\, but Wagner made one appearance when treatment ended\, bald and thin\, but with his ukulele\, while Walter played “Lean on Me.” \nThrough it all\, Wagner remained upbeat\, calling it a “crazy adventure.” “Most people get depressed\, and that’s why they lose\,” he said. “They get afraid\, and it overwhelms them. I never look at the negative stuff. I am gonna make it. It’s just cancer. If it comes back\, I will beat it again.” \nHe was declared cancer-free\, and the pair began performing again. In 2019\, they performed 153 shows across 14 states and continued to cultivate a loyal fan base here and around the world\, with unique renditions of the music of everyone from Sinatra to Ed Sheeran and Michael Jackson. From hip-hoppers to jazz aficionados\, pop enthusiasts to ravers\, rockers to reggae lovers\, all found common ground in a show that was\, in equal parts\, a rock concert\, dance party\, jam session and vacation for the soul. \nIt’s been a long journey for the twins from Brazil to the world stage\, but they’ve remained grounded and humble. They like to quote the Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams song\, “Get Lucky:” “We’ve come too far\, to give up who we are.” \nThey have only one mission: to change the world\, one smile at a time. They’re on their way.

SUMMARY:Henhouse Prowlers
DESCRIPTION:The Henhouse Prowlers are brand ambassadors\, and the brand is the universality of music. The bluegrass band began life nearly two decades ago in Chicago\, and its mission has always been to balance entertainment and education. Members Ben Wright on vocals and banjo\, Jon Goldfine on vocals and guitar\, Chris Dollar on vocals and guitar\, and Jake Howard on vocals and mandolin are equally committed to both goals. \nWorking with the U.S. State Department and their own non-profit\, Bluegrass Ambassadors\, the quartet has toured more than 25 countries. Using traditional American music as a foundation\, the musicians have connected folk music\, customs\, and history the world over. The band’s experiences with people and musicians across Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Middle East have shaped its worldview and broadened its direction towards bridging cultural gaps with music\, educational programs\, and workshops. \nThrough the Bluegrass Ambassadors Workshops\, the Henhouse Prowlers have found commonality with people from different cultures through music. From Qawwali music in Pakistan to West African hip-hop in Nigeria to traditional Tatar songs in Siberia\, to American bluegrass\, the musicians have discovered that every culture has ‘music of the folk’ that runs through the minds of its people. Through these interactions with musicians and music fans across the globe\, the group has developed an understanding that people have a lot more in common than music\, despite our differences. \nDuring these workshops\, a small public address system plays the original versions of the songs\, alongside the Prowlers’ interpretations. A television or projector allows the band to share some of its videos and photos from adventures around the world. Each member of the band can give a workshop on his instrument\, from beginner to advanced level instruction. While this kind of programming is common at more traditional bluegrass festivals\, it is also welcomed at more multi-genre and jam band fests as well. \nAll of this is not to say that the Henhouse Prowlers don’t love their traditional bluegrass. On the group’s recent album\, Lead and Iron\, which features 11 original songs\, one of the featured works is “My Little Flower\,” written by Jake Howard. Jon Goldfine says it is emblematic of what the band is about. “The Prowlers have always straddled the line between traditional and progressive bluegrass\,” he said. “We know Jake’s “Little Flower” exemplifies that perfectly. The drive and lyrics embrace both sides of the music we love so much.” \nJohn Lawless of Bluegrass TODAY is more succinct\, calling it “a hardcore barn burner.” \nThe Prowlers latest album\, Unravel\, released in April 2025\, underscores the band’s resistance to being contained by one genre\, with some songs expressing a modern Americana feel and others nodding to classic country and bluegrass standards. On this newest offering\, their trademark four-piece harmonies have only matured in tone and sincerity. \nThe Prowlers have always been about finding and sharing the commonality we share as human beings through the universal language of music. \nCome hear them speak.
