SUMMARY:Florida’s Water: Exploring Our Aquatic Heritage and Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us this winter at the annual CCI Lecture Series!\nWe are excited to welcome you to these in-person events at Blowing Rocks Preserve inside the Hawley Education Center’s Classroom.\nWATER. The Florida “way of life” depends on it – economically\, ecologically\, and for quality of life. Water is the connector of Florida’s unique and productive ecosystems and of the residents and visitors who benefit from the Florida environment. All that we do on land affects our waters – from uplands to freshwater wetlands\, streams\, rivers\, lakes\, aquifers\, springs to brackish rivers\, tidal creeks\, coastal marsh\, mangrove forests\, estuaries\, coral reefs and offshore environments. Despite significant investments in improving water quality and hydrology\, many of our freshwater habitats and estuary habitats continue to decline. So\, what can we do? Join us to explore opportunities to harness the benefits of innovative approaches while maximizing solutions to improve the condition and function of this valuable resource\, in addition to discussing the challenges that must be overcome. \nAll lectures are free but require registration in advance.

SUMMARY:Learning the 3 R’s of Eastern Indigo Snake Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Join us this winter at the annual CCI Lecture Series!\nWe are excited to welcome you to these in-person events at Blowing Rocks Preserve inside the Hawley Education Center’s Classroom.\nThe longest snake native to the United States\, the non-venomous eastern indigo snake can grow up to 8.5 feet long. Eastern indigo snakes used to roam widely across North Florida but by the mid-1980s they were essentially gone from the landscape\, in part due to habitat loss and fragmentation\, and were designated as a federally threatened species. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) recognized an opportunity to join in the effort to bring the snake back to its historic range and bring balance to the ecosystem. Decades of work culminated in releasing the first group of 2-year-old indigo snakes in 2017. Additional snakes are released each year as TNC and partners work to establish a self-sustaining population. Join this lecture to learn more about the eastern indigo breeding program and how you can support major milestones! \nAll lectures are free but require advance registration.

TNC’s approach has evolved from one that was primarily focused on managing preserves for biodiversity to one that includes developing policy and funding\, supporting the leadership of Indigenous fire practitioners\, growing skilled fire management workforces and helping communities develop ways to live more safely with wildfire. Florida’s landscapes are full of plants that thrive with fire—come learn why that’s a good thing! Explore how fire-adapted species keep ecosystems healthy and what simple steps you can take to make your home Firewise. Learn how local actions contribute to greater conservation efforts. \nAll lectures are free but require advance registration.
