JENSEN BEACH IS ALIVE WITH “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”
JENSEN BEACH, FL (March 26, 2017) – Jensen Beach is alive with the sound of music.
One of the world’s most popular musicals, “The Sound of Music” will be performed by the award-winning singers and actors of the Jensen Beach High School Drama Department on April 6-9.
“The Sound of Music” retells the romantic and beloved story of the musical von Trapp family as they flee war-torn and Nazi-occupied Austria. Rodgers and Hammerstein popularized the story in 1958 and won five Tony Awards. The Broadway show led to a big screen debut starring Julie Andrews in 1965. The film won five Academy Awards.
When a postulant, Maria Rainer played by senior Allyssa McNiel, proves too high spirited for religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain, played by senior Nolan Comm. Once a loving father, Captain von Trapp becomes a strict and detached disciplinarian. Maria reintroduces the children to music with songs such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Edelweiss”. Through Maria’s growing rapport with the children and generous spirit, she captures the Captain’s heart and they ultimately flee their beautiful homeland being invaded by the Nazi regime.
The production features many singers of JBHS’s Jubilate Chorus, who were acknowledged with “Superior with Distinction” awards at a state-wide competition. The awards were characterized as “the finest conceivable performances, worthy of the distinction of being recognized as among the very best.” The adjudicators selected Jubilate for performance honors as a “choir of distinction.”
