THIS FUN-FILLED FAMILY EVENT ALLOWS US TO GIVE BACK TO FLORIDA’S DISABLED VETERANS FOR THEIR SACRIFICES.
The 7th annual Treasure Coast Bonito Blast (TCBB) works with various Treasure Coast businesses to create an event that brings our quaint town and city (with a fishing problem!) and community together in appreciation and support of our Wounded Warriors of South Florida. The event includes $2,500.00 in prize money, dinners, live music, auction items and a raffle for a state-of-the art Flying Fish Paddleboard, complete with a Carbon Fiber Paddle! The charitable donation to support the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF) for this paddleboard is only $5 per ticket or 5 tickets for $20.
The TCBB is the largest one day tournament on the Treasure Coast. The Bonitos are always biting at this time of the year! To date, the tournament has raised over $300,000.00 for the WVRF, which has provided assistance to approximately 130 veterans (https://wvrf.org). Please do your part to give back to those who gave so much by supporting the TCBB. This is our way of giving back, especially for those of us who did not serve.
The WVRF was founded in 2009 to assist qualified disabled post 9/11 veterans transition into civilian life. The organization provides immediate emergency financial support to these much deserving veterans. More than 85% of all funds donated to WVRF go directly toward veteran assistance, earning them GuideStar’s platinum level recognition for performance and serving Florida’s veterans. WVRF assists in getting their lives back on track by helping with job training, housing, transportation, past-due bills, child needs and other forms of assistance, too numerous to list. The WVRF mission is to save lives and keep these families together. Please remember, we enjoy the many blessings of freedom, which are not “free”, secured for us by these heroic veterans’, and their families’, many sacrifices. Home of the free because of the brave.
As Mike Durkee, Executive Director of WVRF has said, “the veterans’ stories are why we do what we do…when they return home after fighting for our freedom, a new journey begins, often fraught with hardships. We are grateful to the community for their incredible generosity and support of these heroes after all they’ve done for us”. The WVRF wishes to thank our community for its overwhelming support for this special veteran’s event. In addition to the funds raised, taking various veterans fishing means so much to them; especially seeing the community come together to take part in such a patriotic event. The WVRF is very grateful for all of the support shown to our veterans over the past six years.
The Captain’s meeting on Friday August 16, 2019, will include dinner, tent events and entertainment by one of the most popular, talented and dance friendly bands on the Treasure Coast, Jupiter Trailer Trash. Gary Kohler, the leader of the band, as well as all of its members, is honored to be able to support our veterans and this event. The Awards party on Saturday night, August 17, 2019 will include dinner, a silent auction and music by the Mikey B band. Mike Babick (“Mikey B”) is very passionate about supporting these veterans and their families. Mikey B will also double as MC, along with Mike Durkee, for the festivities.
Pirates Cove Resort and Marina, Stuart, Florida, will host the Captain’s meeting (August 16, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.), weigh-in (August 17, 2019, on the dock from 12:00-3:00 p.m.) and the Awards party (August 17, 2019, at 5:00 p.m.). Pirates Cove, TCBB’s new home for this year, is perfect for this tournament. It has old Florida charm and great atmosphere, in a gorgeous and spacious contemporary setting.
This is Pirates Cove’s first year hosting the tournament and its ownership and staff are very much looking forward to being involved in this worthwhile event.
Captain Billy Black and Karen Hermanspan are once again organizing volunteer boat captains who will host Veteran anglers, many of whom have never fished in a tournament before.
Ariel Seafood has graciously supported this event for 6 years and will once again donate all proceeds obtained from the sale of all unwanted Bonito, collected on the day of the event, to WVRF.
A huge thank you to Paul Gonnella and Michael Politano, owners of Manatee Island Bar and Grill, Port Salerno and Fort Pierce, Florida for their 6 years of tremendous support for this tournament and cause.
